Chassis:
The second M23 produced by McLaren, this chassis debuted in the hands of Peter Revson at the 1973 International Trophy at Silverstone. The talented American driver finished fourth, which was a result he repeated in the Spanish and Dutch Grands Prix. Crucially, Revson also used M23-2 to score a win in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Late in 1973, it was also raced twice by Jody Scheckter. At the end of the season, the M23 was sold to Dave Charlton, who raced it in South Africa with great success, scoring eight wins in 1974 and 1975. The next owner, John McCormack rebuilt the car to F5000 configuration by fitting a Leyland V8. He would go on to race the car ‘Down Under’ through to the end of the 1980 season. In later years, it was owned by McLaren International before it joined the collection of Jody Scheckter. The 1979 World Champion eventually decided to part with his stable by consigning the cars he raced to the 2024 RM Sotheby’s Monaco sale.
