Powering the Type 37 was an engine that was for all intents and purposes the Type 35's straight eight cut in half. Like its bigger brother, it featured an integrally cast cylinder head with a single, bevel driven overhead camshaft. This actuated three vertically mounted valves; two inlet and one exhaust. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine was rated at around 60 hp. In 1927, the range was extended with the supercharged Type 37A. The Roots-type 'blower' helped increase the power to between 80 and 90 hp.

The Type 37 carried over the Type 35 chassis and body design but with a narrower grille due to the smaller engine fitted. In good Bugatti tradition, the chassis consisted of a steel ladder frame with a solid axle and semi-elliptic leaf springs at the front and a live axle suspended by reversed quarter elliptic springs at the rear. In place of the iconic cast wheels fitted to the Type 35, the Type 37 boasted more conventional wire wheels.

With the Type 37, Bugatti offered a small sports car that offered many of the Type 35's attributes for a more agreeable price. In Type 37A form, the 'entry level' Bugatti could also compete in Grand Prix racing until the 1.5-litre formal was abandoned from the 1928 season onwards.

It is believed that around 290 examples were produced between 1926 and 1930. Of these, just 67 were built to the Type 37A or Grand Prix specification.
