Page 1 of 1 At the occasion of the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show ("IAA"), Mitsubishi Motors has decided to give a first hint at this major new venture through "Concept-Sportback": a study for the 5-door sports hatchback class whose popularity is increasing in Europe, especially amongst premium makes.
Concept-Sportback was created by Mitsubishi Design Europe's Exterior Chief Designer Omer Halilhodzic and his team, based near Frankfurt (Germany). Conceived under the overall guidance of Akinori Nakanishi - now Head of all Mitsubishi Motors design operations worldwide - Concept-Sportback is a further DNA exercise for MMC, bridging heritage and vision, Japanese roots with global customer-base, sporting spirit and clever practical solutions.
The evolution of Mitsubishi Motors' design is also readily apparent in Concept-Sportback's exterior, and in particular its front face. Whilst concepts (CZ2, Tarmac Spyder, Pajero Evolution,etc,...) or production cars (Colt, Lancer, Grandis, etc,...) have clearly established the triangle-shaped 3-Diamond logo as the focal point, the US-only new Eclipse coupé and Raider pickup brought early this year a first evolution with a larger inverted gaping grille inspired by jet fighters'air intakes. Concept-Sportback goes one step further with a full blacked-out background where the logo takes center stage in a full iconic front face.
In parallel to this evolution, a sporty wedge-like profile, sharply chiselled lines, assertive stance born from long wheelbase / wide track proportions, and very expressive high-shouldered rear end allow Concept-Sportback to embody MMC's vision for a sports sedan.
The 4500 mm long Concept-Sportback is the first indication of the design, packaging and engineering directions MMC has taken for this new strategic global platform. In particular, one of its major assets will be the ability to accommodate different bodystyles, engines and transmissions. Page 1 of 1
