Page 1 of 1 Three years after the 997-generation Porsche was introduced, the hardcore GT2 model was launched at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). Whereas the original GT2 had created as a homologation special for a competition car, the new-for-2007 example was strictly a road car. Based on the 911 Turbo, the GT2 was more powerful, lighter and crucially had rear-wheel drive only.
As on the 911 Turbo, the GT2 was fitted with a pair of variable geometry turbochargers. The twin-turbo, flat-six engine was reworked and now produced 523 bhp in GT2 spec, which represented a hike of nearly 50 bhp. By eliminating the Turbo's all-wheel drive system and fitting carbon-ceramic brakes as standard, the GT2 was considerably lighter. It was also fitted with a revised body-kit that included bespoke front and rear bumpers, a full-width rear wing and titanium exhausts.
Less than two months after the Frankfurt launch, the first 997-generation GT2s arrived at the German Porsche dealers. It was the fastest regular production Porsche 911 yet and the first to break the 200 mph barrier with a 328 km/h or 204 mph top speed. It could accelerate to 100 km/h in less than four seconds. Walter Röhl managed to set a Nürburgring lap time of 7:32 with the GT2. It was produced between 2007 and 2012.
To conclude the production of the 997 on a high, Porsche added the limited production GT2 RS to the line-up in 2010. It was reportedly built in response to Nissan, who had broken the GT2's 'Ring record with the GT-R. Internally the, the RS was known as project 727 in reference to the Nissan's lap time. By fitting revised pistons, intercoolers and turbochargers, and revising the engine management system, the power was increased to a staggering 612 bhp. A further 70 kg was also slashed off the GT2's kerb weight.
The GT2 RS was almost half a second faster to 100 km/h and had a top speed of 330 km/h. In the hands of Timo Kluck, it also lapped the Nürburgring another nine seconds faster than the Nissan GT-R had gone. Production of the GT2 RS was limited to just 500 examples.
No 'regular' GT2 was built of the subsequent 991-generation 911 but eventually a GT2 RS was produced between 2017 and 2019. Page 1 of 1
