After modifications in March 1994 that mainly concerned styling, in September 1995 several technical improvements were carried out on the 8-cylinder and 12-cylinder models. A completely new 5-speed automatic transmission with lockup clutch which had been used on the S 600 Coupe since May 1995 was introduced, replacing the former transmission with hydraulic control. The heart of this technical wonder is an electronic transmission control which adapts gear shifting behaviour rapidly and independently to any driving situation and which constantly exchanges data with the electronic motor management. The new automatic transmission is also a lot more compact and lighter than comparable 5-speed transmissions.

The engines were revised again in order to reduce consumption and emissions further. Both V8-engines thus received a modified crankshaft, optimised valve control, lighter pistons, individual ignition coils for each cylinder and improved motor management of the type ME 1.0. On the V12-engine only the ignition coil arrangement and the electronic motor management were changed. As a result of the engine modifications and the use of the new automatic transmission the consumption of the V8- and V12-versions was reduced by an average of 7 % and emissions by more than 40 % with unchanged performance. The 'Electronic Stability Program' (ESP) has also been available as an option for all 8-cylinder S-Class models from September 1995. This system assists the driver if he makes a mistake by automatically braking one or more wheels and has been standard equipment on the 12-cylinder models since then.
