Page 1 of 1 South African Tony Kotze built the car for the South African Gold Cup series. Like most South African specials it was powered by a 1.5 litre 4 cylinder Alfa Romeo engine. This Alfa Romeo engine was connected to a Colotti five speed gearbox.
In its design the Assegai followed the lines of the Cooper F1 cars but was slim and was substantially lower. It had a unprecedented ground clearance of only 3.5in. Kotze entered the Assegai in its only GP, the 1962 Rand Grand Prix, for which it failed to qualify.
The Assegai is seen in the pits of the Silverstone circuit, the current owner told us that he races it quite regular in South Africa. At the time that the picture was taken the engine fitted in the car was an 'illegal' 1.6 litre Alfa Romeo engine, the original engine ceased working right before the car was shipped to Europe.
