That is hardly surprising considering that the car was the brainchild of two former Caterham employees; Ansar Ali and Mark Edwards. A year after the car's introduction, it was joined by the more powerful E10 S, and now the even more potent E10 R has been added to the range.

Like its sister cars, the E10 R is built around an aluminium backbone chassis, which is reinforced by the carbon-fibre composite cockpit section. Double wishbones with adjustable dampers are fitted on all four corners. Although fully road legal, the E10 R is intended for track-day use and does not come equipped with luxury items like a windshield. Lighter wheels have been fitted, which has shaved 10 kg from the important unsprung weight.

New for the E10 R is a 2.3-litre version of the Ford-based EcoBoost engine. Mated to a six-speed gearbox, the four-cylinder engine is mounted transversely behind the cockpit. Like the 2.0-litre engine fitted to the E10 S, the R's 'four' is turbocharged, boosting the power to 350 bhp. This helps the lightweight machine launch to 60 mph in around 3 seconds.

Priced at £39,995, the E10 R will be available early in 2016.
