It is inspired by the 1952 Alfa Romeo C52 designed by Touring and nicknamed "Disco Volante" (Italian for Flying Saucer) on the eve of the space age and extra-terrestrial sightings. The public embraced the Disco Volante and its revolutionary streamlined contours, though the car's ascendancy went far further: the bodywork was so innovative that it influenced numerous celebrated sports cars of the decades to come.

Chosen by Alfa Romeo to mark its centenary celebration with a bronze sculpture now displayed in Milan, the C52 Disco Volante is one of the most significant models in motor car history.

As mind-blowing in design as its ancestor, The Disco Volante Spyder stretches the concept of open top car to extreme boundaries, though delivering an unexpected degree of comfort and riding quality. It is a bold interpretation of the open top car, fully devoted to the pleasure of riding with wind tousling one's hair.

Endorsed by Alfa Romeo and proudly bearing the Alfa Romeo badge, it is based on the rolling chassis and drivetrain of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione Spider.

If the covered front wheels and the muscular haunches of the Disco Volante were not innovative enough, the sharp-cut windscreen adds a provocative touch. The Spyder allows an uninterrupted sharp edge run from the frameless windscreen top through the side glasses and fairings, encircling the whole car with a seamless and dynamic, though unaggressive, trait.

No redundant line perturbs the dramatic volume and surface, delivering pure and timeless emotion.

Superleggera means super lightweight in English, so removing weight was a major concern in the roof design. An innovative twin carbon fibre roof gives the car all the protection of a true coupé. When fitted, it converts the Disco Volante Spyder into a comfortable fixed-head sports car, insulating the cabin at any speed. Besides lightness and beauty, the roof allows practicality: it is designed to be comfortably stored into the boot, still leaving room for a real luggage set.

With each roof weighing a bare 3.5 Kg, substantial weight is removed from the upper part of the vehicle, with great advantages both to handling and performance.
