Page 1 of 1 At the 1995 Geneva Motor Show, Porsche completed the new Type 993 line-up of the iconic 911 model with the launch of the Turbo version. Like its naturally aspirated counterparts, it was a substantial evolution of the 964 generation of the 911. The new 911 Turbo also incorporated lessons learned with the development of the 959 supercar of the mid-1980s.
The new 911 Turbo's engine was based on the 3.6-litre unit fitted to its predecessor. For the first time the engine was fitted with a pair of KKK turbochargers and air-to-air intercoolers. Further modifications included redesigned cylinder heads and reinforced internals. As a result, the engine's output was raised to 300 kW or 408 hp. The very potent engine was mated to the same six-speed gearbox that was fitted on the naturally aspirated models.
Inspired by the Porsche 959 was the all-wheel drive system that was fitted to the 911 Turbo model for the first time. This specific system was also fitted to the 911 Carrera 4 and was electronically controlled and featured viscous couplings. Like the other Type 993 models, the new 911 Turbo featured a revised multi-link suspension and internally ventilated and cross-drilled disc brakes on all four corners. Among the identifying features are the sizeable rear wing and yellow callipers.
Production started in 1996 and for the following year several subtle improvements were made. From 1997, the Porsche Exclusive Department also offered the Turbo S model. It featured a more powerful engine that produced 430 hp on the export model, while German customers received a 450 hp engine. It also boasted additional front intakes to provide more cooling for the brakes.
Although the all-new, water-cooled engined Type 996 Porsche 911 was introduced in 1997, the 993 Turbo continued to be produced through to 1998. At that time close to 6,000 examples had been produced and an additional 345 Turbo S versions. It remains as the last of the classic air-cooled Porsche 911 Turbo models.
