Chassis:
Of the four 555 Super Squalos built for the 1955 season, two were modified for Formula Libre races at the end of the year. The changes included a larger engine and a slightly longer wheelbase. Chassis FL/9001 is the first of these but it is unclear which of the four cars formed the basis for it. It was raced very successfully by Peter Whitehead in Australia during the 1956 season and a year later Tom Clark continued to add wins to its tally. At one point, the Super Squalo was fitted with a V8 engine but eventually the original and engine were reunited. Fully restored, the car was raced to victory in its race at the 1999 Monaco Historic Grand Prix. It is pictured above at the 2002 Louis Vuitton Classic where it lined up alongside its Mercedes-Benz and Maserati rivals of old.
