Chassis:
This is believed to be one of the four 4.5 litre Peugeots entered for the 1914 French Grand Prix. It was subsequently sold to the United States and raced at Indianapolis. Long believed to be Dario Resta's Indy 500 winner, it was later determined to be the car raced to third by Ralph Mulford in 1916. It was raced again at Indy in 1919 by Art Klein. The latter eventually sold the car to the late American collector Lindley Bothwell, who attempted to qualify the car at Indy as late as 1949. Still owned by his widow Ann, the very rare Peugeot is seen here during the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed where Indy 500 centenary was celebrated. Having been part of the Bothwell collector for nearly 70 years, one of just two surviving Charlatans Peugeots, it was consigned to a dedicated Bonhams auction of the complete collection.
