Chassis:
This is understood to be the fourth and final new Ferrari 125 F1 built during the 1949 season. Its racing record in its original guise is not known but it definitely re-appeared at the 1950 Grand Prix des Nations in Geneva. It was fitted at that time with the 4.1-litre Lampredi V12 and referred to as the 340 F1. Driven by Alberto Ascari, it started second on the grid but ultimately failed to finish due to an engine issue. It was pressed back into service for the season finale, the Penya Rhin Grand Prix at Pedralbes. Piero Taruffi used the car to finish third in this non-championship event, behind team-mates Ascari and Dorino Serafini in larger engined 375 F1s.
For the 1951 season, Ferrari built-up brand new cars and the unique 340 F1 was presumably only used for testing. Renumbered 0566, it was eventually sold by the factory in 1955. The car most likely ended up in Brazil where it was campaigned in Formula Libre events by Chico Landi. During the 1970s, it was retrieved by Colin Crabbe. He rebuilt the car, now fitted with a 4.5-litre engine, and briefly campaigned it in historic events. Shortly after, it joined a Dutch collection and continued its historic racing career. It has remained the ownership of the same family ever since.
