Chassis: GR7/704
Originally built in 1973 as the fourth of five M6s, this car was upgraded the following year to GR7 specification along with two of its sister cars. In its M6 guise and as chassis 604, it was first raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans by Mike Hailwood, John Watson and Vern Schuppan. The car ran as high as third until Schuppan lost control and the car ended up on the Armco barrier. Once repaired and raced again at Watkins Glen where Hailwood and Watson finished a delayed fifth. Over the winter, this chassis was rebuilt to GR7 specification and accordingly renumbered 704. In this configuration, it debuted at Spa where Derek Bell and Hailwood led the 1000 km race until a fuel pressure gauge burst and the car ultimately finished second. Bell and Hailwood were also behind the wheel for that year's Le Mans where a plethora of suspension and electronics issues confined the car to the pits for nearly three hours. Chassis 704 nevertheless placed fourth overall. Following three more outings under the Gulf Research Racing banner where it finished third at every occasion, the car was sold to Georg Loos. His Gelo team raced the car into the 1976 season. It has since been restored to its Gulf colours and is today part of the impressive Rofgo Collection.
