The third McLaren M12 was sold to loyal customer Lothar Motschenbacher. He first raced the car in the fall of 1969 and proved to be one of the quicker 'also rans' behind the Bruce and Denny show. Motschenbacher qualified third and finished fourth at the St. Jovite Can-Am race. In 1970 campaigned the car in the opening two rounds of the Can-Am Challenge, which he would eventually end second in the driver's standings. Later that year Tony Adamowicz also did two races in 'M12-60-03'.
The car eventually ended up in a German collection. It was repatriated to the United States in 2000 where it was fully restored. Beautifully maintained by Tony Nicholson, it is now regularly campaigned in Can-Am retrospectives. In 2005 the red M12 starred in the Can-Am group during the Monterey Historic Races.
