Following its pair of outings, the unique Shadow DN7 was retired from contemporary racing. Although the agreement with Matra stipulated that the engines had to be returned, Nichols convinced the French manufacturer to hand over one of the three 1975-spec V12s to allow the DN7 to be displayed as a complete car. Unfortunately, the MS 73 sent to the United Sates did have a sizeable hole in it, so the DN7 could not be turned into runner easily. Nichols retained the DN7 in his private collection for many years but ultimately sold it on to the current owner in the early 2010s.
Faced with the hole in the engine, the new owner set about searching for one of the other two V12s but failed to find one. Instead, he sent his V12 to a Matra expert in France for repairs. Here it was discovered that the engine was quite unlike the V12s built before or after the Shadow program, which underlined how serious Matra was about the effort. Along with the engine, the car was also rebuilt. It made its first public appearance at the 2015 Goodwood Members Meeting. Here it was driven by Jean-Pierre Jarier, who remarkably still fitted in his original seat he last used forty years earlier. The one-off DN7 was later also demonstrated at the Goodwood Festival of Speed later in the year.
