Following the class winning success with a Berlinetta bodied 6C 2300B at the Mille Miglia in 1937, Touring created a new Spider bodied machine for the 1938 to be raced by Count Giovanni Lurani's Scuderia Ambrosiana. Using the very first 6C 2300B MM chassis, the construction of the lightweight and slippery machine was overseen by Alfa Romeo's chief engineer Vittorio Jano. Compared to the Coupe used the previous season, the new Touring Corsa Spider was a full 100 kg lighter.

The unique Spider Corsa was entered in the Sport Nazionale category of the Italian Championship by Scuderia Ambrosiana for the young and hugely talented Franco Cortese. He absolutely dominated and won the championship by scoring seven victories in the eight races he competed in. The 6C 2300B MM was fittingly also entered in the Mille Miglia where Cortese added another class win to the 6C 2300 tally.

Like so many Alfa Romeo competition cars of the period, chassis 815001 was re-bodied with more luxurious coach-work for use on the street following its competition career. In this case, the Touring Spider Corsa was discarded in favour of a Cabriolet body created by Pinin Farina. After the car's racing provenance was discovered during the 1970s, then owner John Coombs had a new body constructed following the original Touring design.

Restored to its original condition, chassis 815001 has been regularly campaigned in the Mille Miglia retrospective, reaching the finish every time. Now owned by a prominent Swiss collector, it was also shown at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in a special 'Designs by Carrozzeria Touring' class.
