Chassis:
Pressed into service during the second half of the 1986 season, this works car was raced at the Spa 1000 Kilometres where Jochen Mass and Bob Wollek placed seventh overall. Later that year, it was also entered at Fuji for Henri Pescarolo and Al Holbert. A gearbox failure brought their race to an early end. During the opening rounds of the 1987 World Sports Car Championship, chassis 962-006 served as a spare car and was not raced. It returned to action at the Le Mans Test where it was shared by Bob Wollek and Kees Nierop. For the actual race, this 962C was piloted by Al Holbert, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Derek Bell. Starting second, they went on to win the race with a 20-lap margin over the second placed, privately entered 962C. The Le Mans winning car was not seen again until a year later when it was briefly used during the Le Mans Test with a young Michael Andretti behind the wheel. Retained by Porsche, it has been restored to its Le Mans winning livery and configuration. It is regularly used by the German manufacturer for demonstrations but is also displayed in the Porsche Museum.
