Chassis:
Delivered new to great Alfa Romeo privateer Franco Rol, this was the second of three competition coupes built in 1948. It was raced four consecutive years in the Mille Miglia, with a third place at its 1948 debut as the best result. In three Targa Florio outings, it finished second, third and fifth. In 1954, this rare Alfa Romeo joined the fabulous collection of French journalist and wine expert Michel Dovaz. He retained the car for four decades and had it restored during the 1980s to compete in the Mille Miglia retrospective. During this period, it was also displayed at various events and in the since closed Musée de Sarlat. The car then passed into German ownership in 1995 and a restoration was started. This was not completed until after it was acquired by noted collector Raoul San Giorgi. Once completed, he showed the car at several events in Europe in 2003. Chassis 920002 then crossed the Atlantic as it was sold to David Smith. He had it restored once more, to represent the configuration during which it was raced in 1949. It has since been shown at Pebble Beach twice and after changing hands once more, it was displayed by Fiskens at the 2016 Retromobile.
