Chassis:
Completed late in 1965, this McLaren M1B was delivered new to Mercury dealer Dick Niles. He fitted with car with a Mercury Comet V8 in preparation for the 1966 season. Raced by Bill Amick, it was entered in a variety of events including several rounds of the inaugural Can-Am championship. The Mercury engine lacked the reliability and outright power of the small-block Chevrolet, so despite his Mercury association, Niles had the car re-engined with a Chevrolet V8 for the 1967 season. In this guise, Amick scored wins in regional events at Portland and Westwood. In 1968, chassis 30-04 was sold to Monte Shelton, who would campaign it in the select Can-Am rounds through to the 1970 season. The car changed hands again in 1972 and by the early 2000s, it was owned by Steve Thein, who had the car restored to its most competitive specification. Fitted with a small-block V8 and Hewland LG500 gearbox, it was subsequently raced by next owner Marc Hevia in several rounds of the CER series. It was then sold through Belgian dealer RMD to the next owner, who had the car returned to its original specifications, which allowed it to compete in the 2016 Goodwood Revival.
