Chassis:
The second M8A built, this chassis was used by Denny Hulme during the 1968 Can-Am championship. He won three of the six rounds on his way to winning the title. For the following season, chassis M8A/2 was updated to M8B specification and served as the spare car. It was pressed into service for one-off outings with Dan Gurney and Chris Amon, before it was used by Bruce McLaren during the final rounds after he had crashed his M8B. McLaren drove the car to victory at Texas in a season absolutely dominated by McLarens. Ahead of the 1970 season, it was sold to privateer racer Lothar Motschenbacher. He did really well that year and finished third twice and also placed second at Mont Tremblant in the two-year old car. An accident at Road America in August of 1970 finally ended the car's contemporary racing career. The only M8A in existence, it was owned for a long period by the McLaren Trust in New Zeeland, who restored it between 2006 and 2008 to its original specification. It is now part of a fabulous McLaren collection based in the Chicago area.
