Chassis:
One of the AMX/3 prototypes, this example was used extensively for testing both at BMW and at Monza in 1969. Cooling turned out to be an issue, so additional radiator inlets were added underneath the headlights. During the tests, the car exceeded the 160 mph target top speed. In 1971, the development prototype as well as the Turin show car were sold to Jerry Werden, who was a friend of the then AMC president Roy Chapin Jr. The test car was sold on to Werden's associate, a Mr deMichieli. He only owned the car a year and it subsequently passed through several hands before it was acquired by Walter and Diane Kirtland in 1989. They had the car restored and showed it at the 1990 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance where both Giotto Bizzarrini and Salvatore Diomanti were in attendance. They confirmed that this was the AMX/3 used during the successful Monza tests. After showing the car at a variety of events and a 25-year ownership, the Kirtlands sold the car to a German collector in 2014. He first had the mechanicals overhauled before showing the AMX/3 at Villa d'Este in 2015. The exterior was then addressed and repainted from the red and black it had carried many years to a particularly striking copper colour. In this guise, it was shown at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in a special Bizzarrini class.
