This Group A 635 CSI was shipped as a shell by BMW Motorsport to Frank Gardner's John Player Special team ahead of the 1984 season. The factory supported team built up the car in time for the Bathurst 1000 race where it was shared by Leopold von Bayern and Denny Hulme. They finished 15th overall and second in the Group A class. During the 1985 season, it was raced by Jim Richards who was virtually unbeatable. Scoring 17 outright victories, Richards won the Australian Touring Car Championship, all eight rounds of the Better Brakes/Amscar Series and the Australian Endurance Championship. In 1986, it was sold to and raced by Garry Rogers, and its career in private ownership continued through to 1990. Following its contemporary racing career, Richard himself acquired his 1985 championship winning car. He eventually sold it on and it passed through several hands before it was acquired by the current owner in 2005. He is a great BMW enthusiast and had the car meticulously restored by Peter Bouts to its 1985 configuration and livery.
