Chassis:
The very first Costin bodied Lister built, chassis BHL 121 was the development prototype. Fitted with a Chevrolet V8 engine, it was delivered new to John Ewer. He raced the car with considerable success at tracks like Goodwood, Silverstone and Snetteron, well into the 1960 season. It was then sold to Rhodesian Jimmy de Villiers in August of 1960. He entered the car in the first Rhodesian Grand Prix for John Love. A talented driver, he is believed to have won the South African Championship with this car. In subsequent ownership, the car was damaged in a fire in 1965. The Costin prototype was later repatriated to Great Britain by noted Lotus Formula 1 mechanic and restorer Cedric Selzer. He sold the car, which was in rather derelict condition, on to David Beckett, who had it comprehensively restored. Regularly raced in historic events, it remained in British ownership until 1999. It was then sold to Pat Hart from Seattle. He had the car restored once more, this time by Tony Garmey from New Zeeland. In more recent years, it was acquired by the current, American owner through Bruce Canepa. Early in 2017, it was offered by British dealer Fiskens and shown at Retromobile. It did eventually change hands in the early 2020s before it was consigned to the 2024 Bonhams Amelia Island Auction.
