Chassis:
Built ahead of the 1997 season, this was the first of three 911 GT1s built for the factory team with the 996 style headlights. The car was first used for the Le Mans Test where it set the third fastest time. For the actual race, the car qualified third but ultimately failed to reach the finish due to a gearbox problem. In the subsequent three FIA GT outings a third at the Laguna Seca round was the best result. The car was then used by Canadian Klaus Bytzek in the Canadian GT Championship for several years and also served as a T-car in the 2001 Daytona 24 Hours.
Chassis 004 was finally retired from contemporary racing in 2005 when it was then acquired by American collector Phil Bennett. Three years later, it joined the formidable Porsche collection of the late Matt Drendel. He had the car restored to its 1997 Le Mans livery and used it several events before his untimely passing. In 2012, it was sold by his estate at Gooding's Amelia Island auction. Repatriated to Europe, it is today part of a French collection. At a rare outing, it was demonstrated by British journalist Richard Meaden at the 75th Goodwood Members' Meeting.
