Chassis:
One of the original 25 cars, this chassis was not raced during the 1969 season. Updated to 'K' specification, it was handed to John Wyer's Gulf team in March of 1970. Entrusted to Perdo Rodriguez and Leo Kinnunen, it was driven to outright victories at Brands Hatch, Monza and Watkins Glen. The pairing was not as successful at Le Mans where they crashed out after starting fifth. For the 1971 season, it served as primarily as the spare car, with the exception of the Watkins Glen race where Richard Attwood finished 13th overall. At the end of the year, it was returned to the factory and eventually restored as a museum exhibit. In 1975, it was sold American collector Gerry Sutterfield. He showed and raced the car two decades until selling it on to the current, American custodian. He has continued to field the car at select events. Of the 917s raced in the legendary Gulf colours, this is the only one believed to have survived its racing career with its original chassis.
