Chassis:
The very first 8CM customer car, this chassis was delivered new to Raymond Sommer. He raced the car at the 1933 Monaco Grand Prix but was unhappy with its performance. He returned the car to Maserati, who sold it on to Tazio Nuvolari. It was this car that he entered and modified for the Belgian Grand Prix. Starting from the back, he would go on to score the 8CM's biggest victory. Having served its purpose, Nuvolari sold the 8CM on to aspiring talent Piero Taruffi. His best result was a third in the Coppa Acerbo. Later in the decade, Taruffi modified the car to two-seater configuration and brought it to South Africa. Here it was raced in the Rand and South African Grands Prix before it was retired from contemporary racing. Stored for many years, it was eventually acquired by the Louwman Museum in 1988. Since then, Taruffi's relatively non-invasive modifications have been reverted, bringing the 8CM back to its 1933 Belgian Grand Prix specification.
