Among the very last Lancia 037s built, this car was a works entry in the 1984 1000 Lakes Rally for local heroes Henri Toivonen and Juha Piironen. Winning six stages, they ended the rally in third overall behind the victorious Peugeot 205 of Ari Vatanen and team-mate Markku Alen. Not raced again by the factory team in 1984, chassis 408 re-appeared in the hands of privateer entrant Volta Racing. They fielded the car for several of their privateer racers from 1985 through to 1987. They were quite successful with several victories being scored in local and national championship rallies in Italy. Restored to its 1000 Lakes livery, it is today owned by a British enthusiast, who demonstrated the car at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
