Chassis:
This PC23 was allocated to Emerson Fittipaldi from the start of the 1994 season. He used the car to finish second at Surfers Paradise and then clinch victory at Phoenix. At the subsequent Long Beach round, the veteran Brazilian qualified third but was forced to retire with a gearbox failure. Rebuilt with the push-rod engine, this car was then entered for Fittipaldi in the Indy 500. He was second fastest in qualifying and held a 40 seconds lead over team-mate Al Unser Jr. when he crashed out with less than 25 laps to go. The car was repaired and served as a spare for most of the races and in October of 1994 was used for tyre testing by Unser Jr. Following its retirement from contemporary racing, it was fitted with the push-rod engine again and presented to the Mercedes-Benz Museum. In 2017, it was entrusted to specialists Dawn Treader Performance to bring the car back to full running order for the Goodwood Festival of Speed where it was driven by Karl Wendlinger.
