Chassis:
The 37th McLaren F1 road car built, this car was picked up by its first, American owner at the McLaren factory in July of 1996. Shortly after taking delivery, he and two friends took the car on a 9,600-mile road trip through Europe, visiting France, Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium before returning to Woking. Here the car was serviced by the same people that had built it. Chassis 044 was then shipped to the United States. Here it was federalized by Ameritech and became the first F1 imported into the country and one of only seven that were originally federalized. It has since been retained by its original owner and regularly exercised on the East Coast. It has been serviced by both BMW and McLaren specialists and the modifications required for the federalization process have since been removed but retained with the car. As a result, this one-owner McLaren F1 was in completely original condition when it was consigned to headline the August 2017 Bonhams Quail Auction. No estimate has been given but we reckon it will require a bid of well into the eight figures to pry this precious machine from its very first owner.
