Chassis:
Finished in metallic silver with a blue velours interior, this was one of 24 Porsche 904s exported to the United States in 1964. It was delivered to the Portland, Oregon region Volkswagen and Porsche distributor Knute Qvale. Prepared for racing in-house, it was then raced by local racers Gary Wright and Mike Eyerly. They scored several wins and other podium placings during the car's debut year. Chassis 904-042 was then uprated ahead of the 1965 season with a package from Porsche, which included a new 587/3 type engine with three-dot cam lobes. Eyerly continued to race the car until selling it on to other local racer Wade Carter. He was the Porsche distributor in Seattle and continued to race the car with great success. In 1966 he won both the SCCA Production championships of Oregon and the Northwest.
Carter retired the car from contemporary racing in 1967 and offered it for sale. The next owner was based in Glendale, California and used the car on the road. A subsequent owner sold the car on to noted South African collector David Cohen in 1980. He only owned the car briefly as in 1983 it joined Jeffrey Keiner's impressive stable of Porsche racing cars. Keiner had the car comprehensively restored and then entered it in historic races throughout the United States. The next owner acquired the Porsche 904 in 1997 and during the next two decades used it on the road only. Beautifully maintained and still fitted with the Type 587/3, it was consigned to the August 2017 Gooding Pebble Beach Auctions.
