Chassis:
The third 315 S built, this example was entered in the 1957 Mille Miglia by Scuderia Ferrari for Piero Taruffi. He came out on top in the tragic, final edition of the great Italian road race. The car was then entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans where it placed fifth overall. Obsolete for international racing due to rule changes, chassis 0684 was sold to North American racer Gene Greenspun through Luigi Chinetti. Before taking to the wheel himself, Greenspun entered the car in the Road America 500 for Phill Hill, who promptly won the race. Greenspun then raced the car with less success through to the end of the 1957 season. It was then sold on to Ed Gelder, again with the help of Luigi Chinetti. Gelder raced the car in SCCA events from 1958 through to 1960. Among the subsequent owners of the very last Mille Miglia winner was noted collector Albert Obrist. Following a brief spell in the ownership of Bernie Ecclestone, it was acquired by the current owner in 1998. At the 50th anniversary of the Mille Miglia victory, chassis 0684 was raced in the Mille Miglia retrospective by Prisca Taruffi. As part of Ferrari's 70th anniversary celebrations, it was shown at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance where its first in class award was picked up on behalf of the owner by Sir Jackie Stewart.
