Chassis:
Through Luigi Chinetti, this California Spyder was delivered new to gentleman racer Bob Grossman. Intended for use on the track, it was clothed by Scaglietti with an alloy body. Shortly after taking delivery, Grossman entered the car for himself and Fernand Tavano in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. They finished fifth overall and first in class. Grossman then raced chassis 1451GT through to the 1960 season. Later that decade, he sold the car and it changed hands several times more before it was acquired by Jon Masterson in the early 1980s. During the next 20 years, Masterson showed and raced the car at events all over Europe. In 2007, it was sold at auction and was subsequently shown extensively by the new owner. By the early 2010s, it was submitted to a comprehensive restoration and returned to its 1959 Le Mans class winning configuration. In 2017, it was consigned as the headliner of the RM Sotheby's New York - Icons sale.
