With an eye on entering the virtually untapped Italian market, Jaguar finished this D-Type in red. Ultimately, it failed to find an Italian owner and was sold to a young Bernie Ecclestone through Henlys of Manchester. The next owner was Peter Blond, who started racing the car in 1956, scoring some success in national events. Its racing career continued with subsequent owners through to the early 1960s. Having changed hands several times, the car finally left the British Isles when it passed to American enthusiast George Stauffer. He reportedly showed the striking red D-Type as a display piece in his office. Among the next owners were prominent collectors Chris Cox, Roger Willbanks and Bill Jacobs. This matching number and well documented example was then consigned to the 2018 Gooding Scottsdale Auctions but bids failed to meet the reserve set. With a far more realistic reserve set by its Far East owner, it was then offered at the 2021 RM Sotheby's Arizona sale where it did change hands and topped the sale.
