Featured is one of the three short chassis California equipped with an alloy body. It is the only one of the three that is fitted with the full competition spec engine with the big valves and high compression heads also found in the fastest of the 250 GT SWB Berlinettas. The North American Racing Team (NART) entered it in the 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans for Sturgis and Schlesser to drive. They were running in 11th position overall when the engine died in the closing stages of the race. It was raced in the Sebring 12 Hours in 1961 to a 12th overall.

Fifteen years after the car's active racing career was over, it was purchased by its current owner. He has given sparse outings in a variety of historic races and concours d'elegance. For most of the time he left it in the red over black, but recently he had the car restored to its original white over black livery. With this paintjob, the cars is pictured above competing in the 2006 Le Mans Classic.
