Chassis:
Chassis M8D/1 was assigned to Denny Hulme for the 1970 Can-Am Championship. He used the car for the first races of the season and after a difficult start managed to win three races on the trot; at Watkins Glen, Edmonton and Mid Ohio. The following seasons the car was raced by Lothar Motschenbacher, who was usually one of the fastest privateers. In recent years, it was bought back by McLaren and is today prominently displayed on the 'boulevard' of the McLaren Technology Centre. M8D/1 was used to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Bruce McLaren's passing by revving it for a minute in the MTC. For the celebration of McLaren's 50th anniversary in 2013, it was restored to full running order. During that year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, chassis M8D/1 was driven by various McLaren works drivers including Jenson Button and Sergio Perez. In 2017, this M8D was back in action at Goodwood in the hands of Oliver Turvey and Nick de Vries.
