Shadow built three Mk II / Mk III tubs, and depending on the number of entries, the team raced the car or cars that proved fastest in practice. After their contemporary racing career, the team built two complete cars with the surviving spares and sold them off. Nichols did retain the third tub and only sold it to the current owner in 2009. A great Shadow enthusiast, he had previously restored and raced the even extremer Mk I.
With the two other tubs both existing in Mk III specification, the new owner decided to build up chassis 71-3 to its 1971 guise. The ambitious project was completed in 2011 and the car has since been used in historic events. The only Shadow Mk II currently in existence is seen here during the 2011 Monterey Motorsports Reunion.
