In my opionion the F40, is the best Ferrari ever! You can said the best is the Ferrari Enzo because is more fast, our the F50, because is more beautiful, but the F40 have the true spirt of the Scuderia Ferrari! I have one F40, in scale 1/18! For me, the Ferrari F40, is one of the best supercars ever!
 eeerrrmmm.... yay F50

I personally prefer the F50, a normally aspirated V12 with over 100bhp per litre, no roof and (in my opinion), much better styling make the F50 seem to me to be much the swishier. But I guess It's all a matter of opinion, I'm sure that the people who bought F50's and Enzo's are glad Ferrari made new vehicles though...
 Congratulations.

...... the award goes to mr shelby gt500 - the first true supercar was the muira - you get a bonus point if you can tell me which ex Lamborghini designer has left the company to 'go it alone'. Now the car, phenominal with a capital phenom, how can so much rawness, so little techno wizardry, so much power in so little weight, so much car (it ain't exactly a mini), feel so at home on the autobahn and down a challenging British B-road. Why the F50 was conceived is beyond me as the saying goes if it ain't broke then don't attempt to fix it and fail miserably you money hungry Italian fool - well it goes something like that.
 Still the best 'ultimate Ferrari'

OK - seen the Enzo, never really liked the F50 anyway. This car is still the best of the ultimate Ferraris, even 15 years later.

sorry 250 TRI 1961, although lemansfan was wrong, the first true supercar was not the ferrari 288 gto (although an amazing car indeed), rather, it was the lamborghini miura. regardless, the ferrari f40 is still a work of automotive art.

First of All, I must ask for some beefing op of the descriptions. I mean come on, 2 lines for one of the greatest automobiles ever. This car was even better than its successor. What were they even thinking when they did the f50. The only advantage there was the handling, and that wouldnt have been that great of an improvement, because, of course, this is a ferrari. The handling on this thing would have had to have been great as well. This was a great carin 87 and it still is today
 mmm...no

"Sorry LeMansFan but the F40 wasn't the first Supercar... The 288 GTO was. Anyway, I must say that the F40 is my alltime favourite car. When i'll have the money, the F40 will defenitly be the first Ferrari i'll buy ;)"""
still the hottest car around and here's why...

"The F40 was the first supercar. And the truest racecar for the road. Listen: Design- Still the ""hairiest"" and most racy design out of any car. The ultimate exotic mixed with perfect proportions and beauty. Although it is ""dated"", for it's age(15 years) it looks great. It is a lot easier to design a more civilized shape like the F1, which is why the F40's exotic design is such an accomplishment. Just look at the 2 cars side by side. The F40 looks much more substantial. Engine- modern and fast at the time. Formula One used turbo cars at the time- that is why the F40 had it. The true HP is 500 (but was understated for importing, since it was the first supercar of its kind)- contact Ferrari North America to dispute it. In fact, the turbos can EASILY be turned up to put out 700 HP, to more than match the F1 or ENZO. Chassis- most advanced for its time- carbon fiber and steel space frame. The only car to this day to ""feel"" like a racecar when sat in and driven. I know this (I have driven an F40, 50, and the F1- although the F1 is VERY close). Light weight, but not 2400lbs like the stats above- actually 2800lbs. But still very light (200 more than the F1, and 200 less than the ENZO). Performance- 0-60 means nothing. 1/4 mile is 11.8 secs confirmed which is about the same for the F1. Impressive for a heavier car with less HP. Michael Schumacher and other drivers tested this car, the F1 and F50, and the F40 was THE BEST performer in the shorts and the corners, but lost to the F1 in the straights. Turn up the turbos and that will be easily changed. The F40 was and is a ""reasonably"" priced street all-around racer, made to be affordable to a wealthy people. The F1 was designed to win Le Mans, NOT to be sold to the public and Mclaren put any cost into it and produced 1/12 the numbers of cars as the F40. It is ""relatively"" easy for a factory to make a car like the F1 if cost was NO issue. That is why the F40 sold for (with inflation) $400K in 1987 and the F1 sold for $1.2 million in 1994. Given very similar performance with the F1, imagine what the F40 would be like if: 1- it has technology 8 year newer like the F1. 2- it had both McLaren and BMW backing it (much more sunstantial than little Ferrari). 3- it used materials 3 times more expensive!!!! Also- the race-prepared F40s (the ones running at Le Mans and GT races) almost ALWAYS ran faster lap times than the much newer and better financed F1s. Just look at the starting grid at the 95 and 96 Le Mans and all the races in the BPR Global challenge in 1996. Sorry McLaren."""
 Awesome car....

.... but to see what it REALLY was meant to be like, check out the 288 GTO Evoluzione. When the 288 GTO Evoluzione was stopped in production (with just 5 cars built), Ferrari had to do something with all the engines and components they had left over. The engine in the F40 is actually a detuned version of the 288 GTO Evoluzione's engine. Many competition F40s used 288 GTO Evoluzione components.
