in fact veyron has 3000hp.1000 goes to the wheels,1000 for cooling system and 1000 is useless

the fastest road car is a Mercedes from 1938, that went 433KM/H

The thing I love about this car, is the fact that they (Bugatti) didn't comprimise on their goals. They said that the car was going to have 1000hp, and that it would reach 250mph. They said it have 1000hp, and still be driveable. They said it would be aerodynamic, AND look good (something the Ferrari Enzo couldn't achieve). They said it would be heavy, but would still handle.

No matter how much they got rubbished by everybody in the development of this car, they pressed on, and built the car without comprimise. They are now losing money on every one they sell. But I don't really think that really matters. They have truly pushed the boundaries of current engineering capability, and that is worth more than profit.

actually in the Top Gear review/race of this car Jeremy Clarkson mentions that it handles like a Lotus Elise

No offense, but I doubt, that anyone who complains about "financial failure" here, has got a clue about the background of this car. I'm working together with the guy who designed the veyrons monocqoue, so I just want to introduce you to the thought, that no one at VW ever intended to make the Veyron a profitable car. It has been pointed out on various occasions, that the Veyron is a "technology" car and the whole program didn't cost more than a single formula 1 season. It even has benefits in serial technology and amortising some developing costs. I assure you, that these aren't confidential information, just basics you can find in different press releases.

As the Bugatti Veyron now is being produced, and being made available to journalists, articles are abundant: Even this morning on the front page of my newspaper (Speed monster of 1.8M Euro), with a large article inside. To those who wonder about the price: Yes, the price remains 1.3M, but we in the Netherlands are lucky enough to be paying 0.7M taxes on top of that!

The Veyron now being tested regularly, the top speed is mentioned as being over 400km/h, the highest official record on regular track being 407.5 km/h. The highest official record was written in the books on the Utah Salt flats, at 415km/h. An absolute record for "production" cars

top gear test drove this car, but they never said a word about the handling. it really just seems like a rocket powered tank that'll blow by anything in a straight line but builds up too much momentum to corner well.
everyone compares this to the F1, but the F1 was designed to be simple and bare, while the Veyron seems to be designed to be excessive (speed, power, luxury, driver aid). I have to admit that the engine is very impressive; getting 125 bhp/liter from an engine that big is awesome.
I don't think that the technology in the transmission is all that great of an engineering accomplishment. the cadillac sixteen has 1000 bhp and had to have a transmission to handle that power, granted it wasn't made for racing. also, the abrams m1 (tank) has to put over 1600 hp to the wheels, so the transmission technology has already been developed, they just had to refine it for the Veyron

First off, "After Burner": there is no speed limiter on the veyron if the driver brings the car to a dead stop and inserts a second key into a different keyhole. 253mph is the most it has to give.

The engine is an incredible piece of engineering making ~125 bhp/liter, however I think I'm not the only one saying "with 1001 bhp, shouldn't it have the aerodynamics to take it up to 275-280mph?" Gordon Murray said that if the F1 made 1001 bhp it would make it to 282, assuming the math worked correctly and nothing went "crunch"

On the financial aspect, I don't think that the reputation VW and Bugatti will create with the Veyron will be enough to overshadow the monumental amount of money the project has costed them, and how there will be no profit made.

Anyway, somebody needs to get a professional in the driver's seat and see what it can do around the 'ring.

Yea but Thrust SSC wasn't road legal! the only similarities between that and a car is that it has 4 wheels and an engine. And true the veyron wont go round many corners and 253mph i never said it would, but will can go round corners at 150mph which, correct me if i'm wrong but land speed cars can't, and don't say thay can do a turning arc and 150mph. And a gearbox that can handle 1001bhp will help future cars due to the fact that if one can be built it means that a gearbox can be made for a normal car that will last even longer! You just don't get it this is an epic car!
 Are you all mad?!

This is an outstanding car:
if u got a McLaren F1 and one of these on a starting line, let the F1 get to 120 mph, this would beat it to 200! it has more power than any other road legal car and without a top speed limiter it would smash 300! power and beuty! What a car!
 Yeah, but...

A paddle shift gearbox will filter down to saloon cars, but not a gear box that has to deal with 1001bhp.

An F1 car produces 900bhp from a 2.5litre non turbo engine, can probably do 252mph if they gear it right, weighs less, corners better, doesn't run out of fuel as quick, and only costs £1,000,0000.

You wouldn't drive your Veyron around in Tesco's, you would get your butler to do the shoping in his Vectra.

1960's land speed cars can go around corners, they just need a very wide arc. Anyway, what sort of corners can a Veyron go around at 252mph? a 4 mile oval test track?

A car was built capable of 252mph (and a bit more), it's called Thrust SSC (Google it).
 Not pointless

I have to agree, it is NOT pointless. This car has pushed the engineers to the limit of current technology. All the super-hitech stuff you see on this car will filter down to everyday cars in the next 5 years or so. For example, the gearbox has to cope with 1001bhp, (more than an F1 car), be smooth and fast changing (like an F1 car), but be as smooth round Tesco's car-park and at 250mph on the autobahn. (Not like an F1 car which needs its gearbox stripping down after 4 hours use).
From a financial point of view, it does not make sense. £5m to build, and sell for £800k. mmm, doesn't add up, but the fact that this car was built at all, shows that in this cost conscious world, engineers are allowed to play and build cars like this. RESPECT!!!
(By the way, my company built the centre consoles for each one. Great project)

I'm sorry but this car is far from pointless! True it may cost VW 5,000,000 to make it and they may only sell it for 800,000 but they didn't do it for the profit, they did it to prove it could be done, for the proof that a car capable of 253mph could be made. To prove just what man can do when we put our mind to it!

And yes in 1960 cars were doing more than 250mph, but they couldn't go round corners!
 I don't like it...

This has to be one of the most pointlees cars ever, here's why.

It cost VW £5,000,000. to make each one, and it retails at £800,000. So they make a loss on each car. I don't think they are using it for motorsport to promote the brand(s) involved with this project. At full power a full tank of fuel will run dry in 12 minuets, costing £100 to fill it up again. O.K. so it's the fastest production car, but it doesn't hold the land speed record, cars in the 1960's went faster than 252mph attempting the land speed record.

I certainly don't think of the Veyron as the greatest driver's car of all time. However, as an engineering feat, few things are in the same league. Hats off to Bugatti for persevering and getting the job done properly.

i saw the figures:
0 to 100 km/h / 60 mph:2.5 sec.
0 to 200 km/h / 120 mph: 7.2 sec.
0 to 300 km/h / 180 mph: unther 14 sec.

I have followed the developement of this car and i honestly never thought it would reach its goals. I thought this Bugatti would be hoax. But was I wrong. 407 km/h is a speed for dragsters, not production vehicles, but I sincerely praise whoever dreamed up this car. I have heard that this car gets from 0-100 km/h in 2.5 seconds. Make sure you order the opional 'Spare pair of parts' with your order for this car.
The (very) long awaited Veyron finally came to life!

When I first heard about the Veyron, it was back in the year 2000. It had an amazing 555 bhp and a top speed of about 300 km/h. The engine, a massive 18.4. It was, to me, the best car ever, even though I used to love the Ferrari F50 (and I still do). I could barely wait to see this new Bugatti; but years passed and no news came forth. Then, one day, while reading a car magazine on sport models, I bumped into it again. The performance figures had grown - 1001 bhp and a top speed of 406 km/h, with a 0-100 km/h in just about 3 seconds. The engine, too, had lost two cylinders, being now the 16.4. This was in the early 2003, back to the time when the Enzo ruled the circuit. (I didn't like the Enzo more than the F50, although it was better. However, it wasn't the best, as it was slower with some 15 mph than the McLaren F1).
The only problem with the Veyron, however, was that it wasn't stable any more at speeds higher than 380 km/h. I had real doubts that this car would really become truth, which would have been a pitty. So, the car couldn't yet be built. Two more painful years had to pass before the braking news of the car's release came to my years. It's even better than I used to know.
In the summer of 2005, while being on a trip to Italy and coming to visit San Marino, I found a shop where there was the Veyron, in the 1:18 scale. I had the certitude that I would leave the shop with it, but... unfortunateley for me, the price of the model was 100 Euros (or about 130 US dollars). The problem - I didn't have the money, so now I don't have the car. It brakes my heart, but, life is harsh. Hope I'll eventually find one in Romania too, 'cause this is the car of my life!
 Awsome car...

In my oppinion, best car ever. Nothing comes even close to it. Staggering performance, superb design and... a terribly high price (1 million dollars or more!?). I wish I had been behind the wheel for a few minutes at least. But no, that's SF. Period.
