The engine is not borrowed from Ferrari. Ferrari borrowed the engine from Maserati and tuned it for F430. Maserati actually had the new engine ready before they had the car (Granturismo) to put it in. I believe it is an evolution of the previous 4.244 liter Maserati V8 unit.

I like a lot about this car: the styling, the interior, the handling is supposed to be quite nice, and the motor is a good one, though borrowed from Ferrari. Really, there're only two things wrong with it.
One: The weight. That V8 is a great motor, but it's blunted by the weight of the car, and since it's having to work outside it's envelope, it's strained. I've heard the designer say that he would rather have used a V12, but I think a certain Prancing Horse vetoed that idea.
Two: The lack of a manual gearbox. I know that in some ways it isn't intended to be that sort of car, but it is a Maserati, and one inspired by the 3500GT at that, such a car deserves every option to make it as sporting as possible for the driver who wishes it.

Does the car have borrowed elements? Big deal!! That was, is and will be true for most cars, ever. But, not anyone can make such a beautiful mixt, just few people around the world. Like Pininfarina

That is a Mazda RX8, with the 3/4 tail of an Aston DB9, and the snout of an MC12...
 What a proper car!
