P180 02-13-2011 |
I joined BRM as a Body Shop Team Member early 1971, working mainly on the P160's. At the end of the 1971 Season, we started work on P180-01. This car had a flat floor-pan, coke bottle shaped with a 20mm flange hand raised around the edges, providing the attachment points for the side panels. These were subsequently riveted on using 3.3 mm rivets, a lengthy task. The side panels were made from a single sheet of aluminium alloy, beaten to shape and finished on a wheeling machine. Bill Wilcox was the Craftsman who carried out the wheeling operations and indeed was highly skilled at it, he could make metal talk. The panels were made to a wooden form horse, produced from full size design drawings by a local woodwork shop in Bourne. Having made the first side panel Bill decided the rate of return from the bulbous shape of the panel to the front bulkhead profile was too severe, he modified it a little to give a more flowing transition. Wheeling, a two person activity, enabled me to assist, it was indeed a privilege to work with such a skilled Craftsman. Stan Hope was the Body Shop Foreman, again a Craftsman in every respect. The end result was an extremely good looking car. |
