stay away from the used subarus, if anything goes wrong you will be stuck with a huge bill and unable to clain under warantee.
As i always say in these threads....get an rx7.
Or an N12 Nissan Pulsar EXA, I got one, Its a great first car, the Turbo ones are beasts and the fuel economy is great. Should be able to pick a nice one up for well under 2K.
-
RX7 might be hard to live with day to day. Not much torque low down and could be a nuisance for something you just want to go somewhere
-
turbo equals a big no-no. insurance is needed here folks, under 25 male driver with turbo car? it does not matter if the turbo was restricted to 1mm. they wouldnt insure me.
-
What are your requirements? $9-$10K gives a lot of lee way.
Do you want a 4 cly, 6 cly or V8? Small, medium or large? Sedan, coupe, hatch or wagon? FWD, RWD or AWD? Or are you pretty flexible?
For example, $10K will get a 1999 Falcon AU Forte or a 1998 Commodore VT Executive -both with a few miles up.
Or you can get a 99-00 Magna Executive or a slighly older 96-97 Camry V6.
Early to mid 1990s Honda Accords will just fit into your price bracket. Or a slightly newer Civic. Doubt you'd find a VTEC though.
Or the are plenty of safe choices - Corollas, Lasers, Mirages, Excels. But you may find them a bit boring.
More interesting would be a Mazda MX6, Holden Calibra or Ford Probe - but beware insurance, thrashed cars and big repair bills.
Just checked www.carpoint.com.au - plenty of Mazda MX6s there under $10K - but seem to be all private cars. Calibras are cheap - as low as $6K. Probes are also under $10K.
Then theres the classics. Pick up any Just Cars or Unique Cars and you'll see a mouthwatering collection of older cars under 10K. Peugeot 205GTis, Mazda RX7s, Nissan 300ZXs (the first one, not the second), older Toyota Supras, plenty of V8 Fords and Holdens, old Euros. The list goes on. I'm sure you'd find something interesting.
Or you can go for a "safe" choice that is slightly more interesting than a Corolla, more fuel efficient than a Falcon and easier to park than a Commodore. I can recommend three choices - the Liberty already mentioned, Ford Mondeo (97-00) and Holden Vectra (97-99). Liberty gives you AWD, quality and reliability. Vectra gives good performance, interior space and dynamics. Mondeo will be cheapest, with the lowest mileage, plus good handling and reliability. All have excellent safety records. All are common enough. All are more interesting and have more character than a Corolla.
Give us an idea of your needs. We may be able to suggest other good choices.

lol, motorsportnerd, my dad made carpoint.com :P he works for RPI. which owns very close to every newspaper in NSW. they also contract out to make websites.( my dads department)
anyway, i saw an mx6, but i was thinking that maybe it was too small. im not really that small of a bloke.
prefrences would be towards mid size, 4 to 6 cyl, and wagon/sedan.
so its still wide open:P classics are good too.
im fairly keen to stay away from holdens/fords.

Non turbo Subarus aren't too bad for reliability. Certainly, I'd prefer a non-turbo Subaru Liberty to an older thrashed RX7 when it comes to reliability and repair bills.
Problem with most of the older 10K cars is that they may be reaching the point where repairs can add up.
You just need to get the car checked carefully before you buy it.

MX6s are based on the mid-size 626, so the front seat space should be fine even for a six-foot bloke. I've owned a couple of 626s, and I'm a large bloke. They were fine space wise.
Re the Holdens/Fords - does this include the European, US and Japanese imports?
Since you say mid-size, and you don't want a Ford/Holden, and are worried that the Subarus may be thrashed, give consideration to the Magna.

Jag is the biggest mistake you will ever make, Everyone i know that has had one has sold it within 12months they are always getting fixed engine electric problems.
My uncle worked his but off to but himself a jag, 8 months later he sold it and bought a 95 Fairlane. One guy who had one stuck a Gen3 in it after the engine keeped dieing, Went better then:)

Even maybe an old Camry would be alright, they dont seem to be having any issues
-
you could go a 240/260zx the last 300zx are a good choise, though most of them are imports, but if you could afford the extra insurnace they are pretty well built as long as they havent been thrashed

dont buy a shitbox car for 1 - 2k for a first car, youll spend another 2k fixing it before you can blink. trust me on this;)
for 9k you could get an MX5 but then youre only a bit shorter then me and i dont fit an MX5 at all and an RX7 is a tight fit. maybe an early model MR2? 4AGZE goes pretty hard:)
seriously though youre all right about jags, horribly expensive upkeep.what you really need to consider is not fuel economy or size but availability of spare parts, i struggle to find parts for the datto so much that i dont bother unless it urgent. Something like a GTI-R pulsar might be good but then its a turbo so thats a no no. perhaps a SSS Pulsar. maybe a Vectra? theyre cheap and good for a first car. both have good mileage and lots of spares/ upgrades if you need them.

Hey! My 200SX was a $2K (USD, though) car and it's been doing fine except where I went cheap on the clutch. If you do anything, buy OEM or proven, reliable aftermarket. It may be expensive now, but you won't have to spend it more than once like you would a cheap aftermarket part.
-
we dont have your 200sx here, our 200sx is like a 15k+ (10k USD) car (and thats the non-turbo stock model) bloody awesome car though:)
-
I thought Aussies got the two door Sentra.
