Just following the same model as Jetta...Everything but the 2.0T model will run the torsion beam for the Beetle. I am sure its probably the same design as the Jetta...The 2 cars AFAIK are built side by side in Mexico....
Like the Jetta GLI, the 2.0T Beetle will have IRS, a variant of the control-blade style type(a la Focus) like the Golf...
FYI the Passat is full multi-link setup in all variants. They just cheap out on the engine option and no more 2.0T, for which you have to get the CC.
As far as actual performance goes, it won't handle any worse than the current Civic or Corolla anyway....which is what the Jetta is shooting for, and I'd bet most Beetle buyer with the 2.5 or the TDI don't care about performance as much...Beetle by all account will still have Golf-level of interior trim unlike Jetta's hard plastic interior, which probably annoys their buyers more. The Passat, aside from the bland look, seems to retain most of the VW interior trim level, and its much cheaper than the old one...

In the Beetle's case, apparently, it's not a torsion beam but rather a proper solid axle.

Won't make sense....its not a driven axle....VW's whole thing is to save cost, having a different axle to Jetta, which builds off the same plant, does not save cost...

And it wouldn't please the new 'VP of Customer Experience'. ;)

I treid Google translate but it was hopeless. And I can't be arsed with translating it myself (and I'm not good with technical terms), but you'll have to turst me and the writer, which is a very well known and recognised Spanish Automotive journalist. Maybe they've spent all of their resources on:

Evo calls it Torsion Beam also....I think its a translation issue...

Nothing stops a torsion beam and a solid.
I tihnk it's a tranlsation issue with the term "beam".
This can be taken to mean the connection linking the two rear wheels together so although not driven they act like a live axle.
It also menas the use of twisting on a bar acting as the spring.
So it's possible to be "sold" and torsion.
