Well, I voted for the McLaren, but, upon reflection, I must protest (weakly) this poll, as it concentrates on very recent cars. I therefore offer up this choice, the immortal Alfa Romeo 8C2300, which won from 1931-34, in the hands of such drivers as Nuvolari, Chinetti, Birkin, et al.

I second that, but probably an 8C2900 would also be a suitable choice..

What of the 4 1/2L Birkin Bentley and the Speed Six driven by the likes of Barnato Woolf? I will admit that reliability was a bit lacking... :D

not really a suitable roadcar, Ettore Bugatti used to call them those British trucks.

^^ yeah but that was only coz they were so simple and all mechanics.
No "artistic" design at all :)
Is the poll meant to only be limited to those where there was a Le Mans car and then a "road going" version ( and "modernish" )
Aston DBR1, DB2, DB4 all beautiful
Jaguar C-type then possible overlap with the idea of race first road second ... D-type, XKSS
XKSS for me :)

I thought they had only made the race cars and nothing more, they didn't have to do road versions, so where did that one came from?

It's a very lowly documented car, so I don't know exactly of the REASON for it, but I do know that it was a race car refitted to be run on the road, with inertia reel seat belts and several other safety features being the main changes.
It's also chassis #001, which evidently was deemed unsuccessful enough to be converted.
It's owned by the Porsche Museum and I photographed it in that shot at a local dealer when it was doing a tour of Australia.

Most of the time I see a 911 GT1 Strassenversion in games or images it seems to be a 996 one.. is that the '97 Evo or the '98, and is there a 993 one as well?

I love every single car on this poll, but I think the Dauer 962 is the best. It was made a decade and a half ago now but still, its performance is every bit as good as the Veyron and Koenigsegg.
But if I could own any of these, it would be the Lotus GT1.

This is the 1996 version.

Elise GT1 for two reasons:

I scraped my ankle on the front splitter of the roadcar at Goodwood FoS a few years ago and have retained a strange soft spot for it ever since :o;
I want to see if I'm the only person to vote for it! :D
Pretty insightful post. Never thought that it was this simple after all.
I had spent a good deal of my time looking for someone to explain this
subject clearly and you’re the only one that ever did that. Kudos to you!
Keep it up

The McLaren F1 LM is definitely the best one.
