the rest are "meh" ... go MkII Escort.
THen you can have RWD fun AND plan for some serious performance upgrades :)
What type of performance upgrades do you mean? And are they cheap?
Thing is I don't know if I can be responsible with a fast car since this is my first car.
Personally I'd rather have the Escort or the Astra. But I don't know if they will be easy/cheap to fix.
For what it's worth I am taking a Mechanical Engineering course next year. Not as a profession, but for general usefulness.
Also I wouldn't mind an Opel Kadett Superboss. Wikipedia says they hit 168 bhp.

Nope.
South Africa had a lot of SA-only high performance specials including this Opel (and other Opels), V8-engined Sierras and 3 litre Alfa Romeo GTVs amongst others.

If you were back in the 60's or 70's in South Africa with an Escort or Cortina, I would steer you toward Willie Meisner for your tuning needs. However he is long gone, but AutoStyle Motorsports seems to have some options for you to consider.
Ya know, the Astra is enticing... but considering your options and budget, that Escort is the ticket. Simple to modify and tune, good performance, handling, looks and packaging even 20 years on, it provides big bang for the buck. Or Rand. :D
EDIT: Save some money and paint guardsman blue stripes on it... white is a classic Ford competition color.
