Seriously though, I'd bet on "Racing Sport", loosely translated to German, Italian and whoever else uses it.
The main reason I think it's used is because it simply sounds so good. "RS", "RSR", yummy!

Except for Renault where it means Renault Sport.
"Road Switcher" - if it were built by the American Locomotive Company.
Renn Sport and Racing Sport , its the same just in two different languages...
BMW already used the abbreviation before WWII for their 500 cc racing motorcycles.
RS stands for Rennen Sport. Which means Super Racing in German.

not only - it was used for cars after wwii as well - bmw 700 RS :)

I knew that, but I am looking for the first ever use. This was the oldest I could think of. Veritas also had an RS.
