Anyway, how about the S4 and of course the current world champion, the Xsara.
yes i know that rallys are done on tarmac, and i've already said that the lancia delta is my favorite rally car(on tarmac) but my favorite all around rally car is the race Touareg.
Wenn Sie wissen wollen, was einen volkswagen ein volkswagen macht, treibt es.

The race touareg would not stand a chance on tarmac so it is not really an allround rallye car. In the Sahara it will probably be unbeatable though.

Here you go .. taken from "The evolution of rallying", a DUKE DVD.
Highly recommended if you like the classic Mini, escort, opeal, Alpine (and citroen) days of the past.
I'll try and get the DS video clip if you want

Audi Quattro. It made the link between rallying and 4-wheel drive. Since the Quattro was introduced into rally there hasn't been a single Two-wheel drive car that has won the major championships.

something tries to tell me that a Xsara kit car won a WC tarmac rallye a couple of years ago, but I can be mistaken. I think you are right about the historic meaning of the quattro, but it did take away some of the charms of rallying. Actually when writing this it occurs to me that we could start an action to ban AWD in rallying alltogther

    I wouldn't call it a "link".
Their is very little common between a 4x4 and a 4WD WRC rally car.
Especially a modern one with computer-controlled diffs !!
The Audi was a beast and not particularly easy to steer on any surface.
Made worse by shortening the chassis in a bid to help it round corners.
The Peugeot T16 was more of a ground-breaker.
An RS200 was likely going to be better still, shame it all got banned before we saw the best of it :-)

As a forest stage fan, rallying is best done sideways with rear wheel drive and no driver aids. Sorts the drivers from the joystick jockeys :-)

Well i bought an english ford tuning magazine by accident (they both had thesame name at the time and the other give away was how to install body kits steros and strut braces ) but as far as interesting bits and pieces go they still have a ford rs200 competing at pikes peak. The cars new carbon fibre peices make it look more like an australian super sedan and its won its class 2 years running. Im just wondering any body got any good pics of an rs200?
And I would show you the austrlian rally toranas pic that used to compete in rally austrlia but i cant find one but i can show you the phase 4 GTHO that raced in rally it actually done very well for its size it came 4th in the series. The one that competed was actually green. People dont really follow rally that much here.

World rally championship is based on national rallying in mixtures of forest, track and tarmac stages.
Comparing Pikes Peak cars with stage rallies is like Indy 500 and F1.
PP car's would not get anywhere in tight twisty rallies - and likewise without major engine re-management, wrc cars would struggle a mile high :-)

OK, I sat and watched the DVD again last night and grabbed the DS clip just for you :-)
It's a great DVD, I recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the cars and drivers.

DAMN! Why not allow movie clips ? I cannot load the file to here :-(
So, for a short time only, it can be found at
    DS rally clip (196Kb)
and for your enjoyment two of my Alpine ....
    A610 through hairpin (640Kb)
    Exploding A610 (1.7Mb)

I would have loved to see all this but my computer for security reasons refuses to download the images, I can only hear the sounds which are particularly interesting in the clip of the exploding A610. Did it really go up in pieces?

Don't understand that. The exploding A610 is a Windows Media Video format. ( Hmm I might check again, it may be MPEG4 which needs newer decoders ) The Hairpin is a divx I'm sure. Try righ-clicking on the url and select "Save Target as" and see if it helps then opening it directly. It might be an IE setting.

No, they didn't blow up the 610 they replaced it with a TR7 with bits stuck on to make it look like the A610. It's the WORST special effect in the world !!!!

Well don't worry, it has to do with the fact my laptop that was originally operated within a protected network environment, and still has some features that I cannot deal with. Probably reinstalling everything would solve the problem, but I don't feel like doing that.

A relief to hear that it was a TR7, a long way away from becoming a classic. You're sure it wasn't a TR8?
