Nice race car. How many variants of the Elise are there? Is this still the shape selling in Europe? The US model looks different(headlights mainly).

This is the Series 1. The series thats on sale now is Series 2 which looks identical in the US as it is in Europe. The Exige is a different car from the Elise .. apart from the engine which only develops more power. 0-60 in the S1 Exige is 4.5s wheras 0-60 in the new Exige is 5.2s. This is because the S1 weighs 750kg and the S2 weighs around 900kg. The S2 is more luxury than the S1 which pretty much goes against its race car purpose. Also the Toyota engine in the S2 is heavier than the K series in the S1 (which also sounds better than the 189bhp Toyota block). Personally I think the S1 looks better but its a matter of opinion. We'll probably make a couple of videos just so you can see and hear it in motion.

Because Lotus is taking their cars to America the newer cars are starting to get less raw and heavier thus slower. Theres loads of variants .. to name a few .. 111s , 111r, 190, 160, 120, Type 49 and many more. The Exige isnt a variant as such because it has some substantial modifications.

Thanks for that informative post. Looks wise, I agree the S1 has a more integrated and pleasing shape. I've even read some bad stuff about the Toyota engine, there have been reports of failures caused by high RPM running. Very strange for a Toyota, especially one co-developed with Yamaha. Unfortunately and unavoidably cars get heavier for the States. Luxury or safety are difficult to apply in a LWS.

Love to hear and see the S1 in action!

The Toyota engines are less reliable at high revs and when driven fast but theyre better for going around town (but if you want something to go round town in why dont you get a Prius or something ) Theyre not easy cars to drive at all. We got stuck in traffic and in stop start conditions its near impossible to stop the K series clunking out .. its not made for conditions like that. Its also vey hard to get it started, we spent 5 minutes in a McDonalds car park trying to start the thing. Its by no means easy to drive at all.

Edit : Mustang .. when did I say it was a new one? I said it was an S1

That is a bit misleading as they are basically the same car, just that the Exige is much more "hardcore" having different chassis and suspension tweaks, and the aero kit actually helps, rather than just being an aesthetic appendage.

The S1 Exige was substansially more powerful than the basic Elise, 177bhp compared to 118, but there was the Elise Sport 190, which unsurprisingly had 190bhp.

The S2 Exige has the same 189bhp Toyota engine as the 111R, the 'base' S2 Elise in the USA.
    Thanks for all the fish

The Sport 190 was slower around a track but were lighter making it faster in a straight line. It didnt have the looks or the sound though .. it also had a scary price tag.

Theyre scary cars .. if you find a TVR scary you wont last a minute in this! But i presume your a good driver from what you know about cars. It requires constant clutch control and loads of attention to keep the car from clunking out because the idle speed is very low. My cousin started off owning a Peugeot 205 Diesel then a Ford Ka then a Ford Escort then a MK2 Toyota MR2 G-limited then an MR2 Turbo with over 300bhp then this. Lol - his wife drives a Citreon Picasso and his other car is a Peugeot 406 (because he needs something with a bit more space for work) Thats the sort of thing a devotion to cars leads you to I suppose .. hope the same happens to me (ill probably end out living in an Elise ). The sound it makes is amazing though .. sounds like an Enzo when it accelerated from 30 to 70 and sounds like a 70s Lemans car the rest of the way. Its awesome.

Thought Id come back to this. Ill take some pics of the front and the bonnet vents. The whole front clamshell is basically radiator .. you can see the radiator pressed against the meshing of the front vents .. its great. The Motorsport Elise (the real motorsport elise not the ones that have had an aftermarket kit fitted) had all the vents opened to cool the brakes etc because it needed it because it was much rawer than the Exige. But the MS Elise also only had 1 seat and was barely road legal .. it was just over a cm off the ground. Theyre only used in Motorsport now .. the only road legal ones are the 2 Green press ones and Elises with a Motorsport bodykit.
