That is how Mercedes dubbed their CLS-Class....you might also want to have a look at some British cars that were dubbed 2-door saloons, like an Aston Martin or an Alvis...

yea, depending on the car, both of these could be accurate... different cars are classified under different names, regardless of the amount of doors

Again, the british were first in the 4-door coupe thing with their Rover P5 Coupe, which in fact was a 4-door saloon.

For but one example among thousands, these two Cortinas which share identical wheelbase and similar roofline & cabin size

Please explain why the 2-door variant is NOT a sedan?

They are both saloons imo, because all saloon cars have a seperate boot (instead of a hatch back). There are always grey areas.

What would be your body-type classification of the original Mini? (not a hatchback)

What about drop head coupes? Like you said there are way too many grey areas. I don't think there will ever be a truly definitive answer as to what a coupe is or isn't, the term has become far too corrupted.

The Holden Monaro (as discussed in the GTO vs. 350Z thread) is known as a "two-door saloon" by quite a lot of the media. Also, Wolfgang Konig (who used to write the 'Made In Germany' article for Autocar, I don't know if he still does) once said:

"If you want value, go for a 2-door sedan finished in white, without any air conditioning. The vendor will kiss your feet, although your friends may question your taste..."

I never said that Mercedes was the first to do it, I just quoted the CLS as a current example....If I had mentioned the Rover few people would have immediately understood what I was talking about.

For the record: I would not have made this post if you had not started yours with the pedantic word "Again".....
