Just playing around with this the other day. Obviously, i cant enter them in the competitions but i wanted to share. I inverted them and on the first one selected a portion of the smoke and flipped it to get the mirror effect.

Very cool, what was your lighting setup on this?
EDIT: I prefer the 2nd one, but theyre both cool.
He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
In that palace in the sun
On the shore lay Montezuma
With his cocoa leaves and pearls
light coming in through a window. very low-tech

quick and effective I have a desktop of similar effect.
I've attempted a few shots of my own with smoke, but I wasnt very effective. You just lit an sigarette and took the picture against a white background/sheet of paper ?
i took the pics against a really dark background so the smoke appeared white and then inverted the colors, pulled the saturation in the first, and increased the contrast. it wasnt really set up with a background it was just in my friends room. the lighting/background worked out rpetty well though.

I got some inspiration today. The idea is to take a picture of a cigarette left on the ground to burn. Maybe take it from street level with a almost partly blurred background of a street with pedestrians... Sounds quite complicated, but I hope you get the idea. I might give it a go soon, so do you have any tips/ideas/suggestions ?
sounds like an interesting concept, but what would the point be? pictures have to have a point, it would make a good anti-smoking ad picture maybe?

yeah, works too. B+W is most effective though. Gives a silky silver effect.
yea thatd be good with a bend in it, or even half broken. also, the way i picture me shooting it in my head is with a shallow DOF and then feet running away in the background. something to play with. itll be interesting if we both try this idea to see the differences in interpretation.
