I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet what about Caterham 7? If you want a car as a weekend plaything you want a open top and lugage space and extra seats don't matter.
You want Fun Fun Fun at a reasonable cost.
UP THE BORO!!!!

Gemini With a Super6..
Gemini with a 1800.. RWD 4 speed manual, Handbrake corners will get oversteer, Should run nice on fuel, Blows up easy when Finnished.
I had one back in the 90's.
Kermit it was called, Wonder why?..
1600cc, Cam Heads huge carby, This thing was killing Falcons and commodores with ease at the time, Mum blew the donk one night..
"Just a matter of time i suppose"
"The elevator is broke, So why don't you test it out"
"I'm not trapped in here with all of you, Your all trapped in here with me"
The caterhams and kit cars as enjoyable as they would be are remarkably out of my price range..
MX-5 is a good idea, if abit too costly too.
I think realistically an S13 to get to the point I want it would only cost around eleven grand or so. 200+KW ATW, lipped guards, nice wide wheels and a few bits and pieces.

seems like while an S13 might have lower initial costs, the insurance and operating costs of an MX-5 wodul significantly undercut it. and while there is a healthy aftermarket for big HP gains for the S13, it is also a very heavy car, and not nearly as light and nimble as the MX-5
Honor. Courage. Commitment. Etcetera.
S13's arent that heavy, compared to say, skylines (though I'd hit an R32).
MX-5's may not actually be that much cheaper to insure than an S13 for me. besides, I'm not a short bloke, and I'd probably end up looking across the top of the windscreen and have no view.

From charged's site, maybe something akin to this?

Depending on your pov the above example isn't cheap but the money has already been spent, should be an intense V8 drive. Tired stockers still pop up for not much over scrap value and may be not a bad start for an alternative-type project car? Btw for a low-budget sportster I wonder if the light & compact Holden Red motor fits? (they do into MGBs)
Nota...... I want, the sister had a TR7 with the woeful 2 litre in it, but I used to stitch up so many cars in the Adelaide Hills it wasnt funny. It needed another 100hp as it used to get blown a way on the straights. It was completley stock with better suspension and decent brakes it would have been close to unbeatable. The car finally succumbed to many electrical issues and burnt out the wiring, she traded it on a new Magna

R32 Skyline.
the only problem with the '32 skyline is that it sits just outside of how much i wish to pay. atleast, the GTR does - but i may just buy the RWD version and steal some flares and lip the guards.
